Mitigation of Systematic Noise in F16 SSMIS LAS Channels Observations for Tropical Cyclone Applications

چکیده
The Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMIS) onboard the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F16, launched on 18 October 2003, was first conical-scanning radiometer to combine Microwave/Imagers (SSM/I), Microwave/Temperature (SSM/T), and Microwave/Water Vapor (SSM/T2). Nearly 20 years of F16 SSMIS data are available general public, providing many opportunities study atmosphere at both synoptic decadal scales. However, noise from complicated structures has occurred in brightness temperature (TB) observations lower atmospheric sounding (LAS) channels since 25 April 2013. We used a two-dimensional Fast Fourier Transform analyze characteristic features cross-track along-track directions. found that is around 1–2 K occurs certain wavelengths (Δλ)noise. A latitudinal variation for Due interference, TB reflecting rain, clouds, tropical cyclone warm core, temperature, water vapor distributions not readily distinguishable, especially above middle troposphere (channels 4–7 24), whose dynamic range smaller than low tropospheric 1–3. Examples provided show impact proposed mitigation capture 3D hurricanes directly. Once LAS 2013to present eliminated, we may investigate change cyclones derivable these observations.

P1.3 Applications of Lightning Observations to Tropical Cyclone Intensity Forecasting
The next generation geostationary satellite system starting with GOES-R will include a geostationary lightning mapper (GLM). The GLM will provide nearly continuous times and locations of total lightning with an accuracy of about 10 km over most of the field of view of GOES-east and –west. This coverage will include nearly all of the regions where tropical cyclones occur in the Atlantic and nort...
متن کاملSystematic Approach to Tropical Cyclone Track Forecasting
The long-term goals of this project, which is being pursued in collaboration with R. L. Elsberry and M. A. Boothe, are to improve not only the quantitative accuracy of official tropical cyclone (TC) track forecasts, but also the qualitative meteorological utility of those forecasts. Needed improvements in the accuracy of official TC track forecasts include: (i) reducing the severity and frequen...
متن کاملParadigms for tropical cyclone intensification
We review the four main paradigms of tropical cyclone intensification that have emerged over the past five decades, discussing the relationship between them and highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. A major focus is on a new paradigm articulated in a series of recent papers using observations and highresolution, three-dimensional, numerical model simulations. Unlike the three previous pa...
متن کاملPredicting Tropical Cyclone Genesis
The long-term goal of this project is to provide probabilistic genesis forecast guidance to operational forecasters and develop a genesis index to provide guidance for operational dynamical model prediction of tropical cyclone (TC) genesis. Once regions of high TC genesis probability are identified, a movable, multi-nested version of the COAMPS with resolution of roughly 3 km or less in the inn...
